Tobacco Cessation

Quitting smoking isn’t easy—but it’s easier with the right help. Infirmary Health utilizes The American Lung Association’s Freedom from Smoking® program to help our patients “kick the habit.” Trained Infirmary Health facilitators will provide this evidence-based program at several of our facilities across the Gulf Coast region. A small group meets eight times over seven weeks providing participants with the support they need to achieve proven success.

Freedom From Smoking® helps you develop a plan of action that leads to your quit day. Join one of our sessions at any of our medical facilities listed below to gain the tools you need to remain smoke-free for life!

What Can I Expect from the Cessation Course?

In-person group clinics include eight sessions with a small group of eight to 16 people and are held throughout the country. Led by a certified facilitator, the program features a step-by-step plan for quitting smoking and transitioning to a smoke-free lifestyle. Each session is designed to help smokers gain control over their behavior, and because no single quit smoking plan is effective for all smokers, the program has a variety of evidence-based techniques for individuals to combine into their plan to quit smoking. The clinic format also encourages participants to work on the process and problems of quitting, individually and as part of a group.

What will I learn?

  • How to know if you’re ready to quit
  • Lifestyle changes to make quitting easier
  • How to prepare for quitting
  • Medications that can increase your success
  • Coping strategies for managing stress and avoiding weight gain
  • Developing a new self-image
  • How to stay smoke-free for good

How Does the Program Work?

The Freedom from Smoking® program uses techniques based on pharmacological and psychological principles and methods designed to help smokers gain control over their behavior. Because no single quit smoking technique is effective for all smokers, the program includes a comprehensive variety of evidence-based cessation techniques. The curriculum also includes the latest research about nicotine replacement therapy (gum, inhalers, patches, lozenges, and nasal spray) and other smoking cessation medications such as Zyban® and Chantix®.
