A History of Excellence

Starting in 1896 as a community-based initiative to provide healthcare services to the Mobile community, Mobile Infirmary was born. Mobile Infirmary was formed out of the vision of Augusta Evans Wilson who achieved fame nationally as a writer in the late 1800s. However, in her efforts to provide for the Mobile community, Wilson began a hospital fundraising campaign holding sewing circles, craft bazaars, pencil sales and a $50,000 bond to make Mobile Infirmary a reality.

Opened on October 21, 1910, on Ann Street north of Springhill Avenue, Mobile Infirmary consisted of 32 beds, a laboratory and state-of-the-art operating room. This facility served the Mobile community for 42 years and was financed by the volunteer work of a small group of dedicated women. However, as World War II raged, the need for expanded community medical facilities became clear. Faith leaders, community representatives and doctors banded together to raise over $2 million for the new facility. The new Mobile Infirmary consisted of 285 beds in a facility sitting on 80 acres of what was once the old Oak Hill Golf Course. Less than a decade later, a nursing school opened across the street from the new hospital.

Today, Mobile Infirmary boasts a 681-bed facility that serves as the region’s healthcare leader and offers groundbreaking innovations in technology and medical services. Having grown from one hospital in Mobile, Infirmary Health now consists of three acute care hospitals, three post-acute care facilities and a physician clinic network with over 60 locations as well as six diagnostic imaging centers, two breast centers, two freestanding emergency departments and multiple affiliates.

The largest non-governmental, not-for-profit healthcare provider in the state, Infirmary Health serves 11 counties in southern Alabama and George County, Mississippi. With more than 700 doctors on the medical staff and some 6,500 other team members, Infirmary Health treats more than 1.4 million patients per year. Through its partnerships with local communities and annual charitable funding for community programs, Infirmary Health remains committed after 110 years to bettering community health.
